WHO WE ARE
Bakers Against Racism was founded as a social community, connecting Bakers and creatives all across the Globe to fight against Racism in all of its forms.
We are a collective of people from all walks of life who bake to make the world a better place.
Our History
It all began with small pop-up in April 2020. In the aftermath of the Global ongoing pandemic feeling helpless Chef Paola Velez created a Latin-American Donut pop-up called Doña Dona that benefitted the Local DC undocumented workforce. However, soon after the murder of George Floyd, the world quickly fell into shambles. Chef Willa Pelini reached out to Chef Paola Velez to see if they could host a popup similar to Doña Dona, but feeling helpless again Chef Paola figured it was not enough.
Using the resources she learned during Doña Dona; Velez typed up a mission statement and several detailed documents about how to bake at scale and raise funds, brought on Chef Rob Rubba as the Creative mind behind the graphics and as a co-founder of the movement. She created a website, a hashtag and an instagram. Then emailed the assets over to Rubba and Pelini, and thus Bakers Against Racism was born.
Her hope was to collectively sell 150 pieces of one dessert and price it out at $8/each to raise $1,200 dollars. She thought “If we ask everyone to participate virtually and decentralize it, we might be able to get 80 folks to participate, and collectively we could raise $96,000.” The scale of the project seemed daunting, but the international movement for Black lives fueled a sense of urgency and ambition.
Since activating BAR, more than 3,000 people from over 200+ US cities, 40+ US states, and 4 continents have participated in one of its global bake sales.
